I am not a Rockies fan or a Jason Giambi fan, but I saw that he interviewed to be the manager of the Rockies. That is very interesting to me because he was a player for them last year. Has this happened recently? I mean since player/managers were not around anymore?

Lou Boudreau- Indians and Pete Rose- Reds in MLB. NBA- Dave Debusscher- Pistons, Bob Cousy - Cincy Royals and Bill Russell- Celtics.

Yeah, Rose & Boudreau were player/managers though and the 3 NBA guys were player/coaches. Russell during his last year as a player for the Celtics and then he retired from both for a couple of years before going on to coach the Sonics.
I honestly can't think of anyone who was strictly a player who became a manager the very next year without playing.
