yeah, Portage didn't have a QB last year and look where it got them..you need to have good QB play to win in the playoffs..not saying the guy has to be a D1 talent, but it's hard to make a deep run when you are one dimensional..the only exception I can think of recently is the 2009 Lowell team I hope Portage gives up less than 62 points this year against them..and they better score alot more than 7 While I don't agree that Portage will be the juggernaut that indianbacker claims, I disagree that you need a great QB to get far in the tournament. I can think of countless cases of teams that did not pass the ball, and basically used another RB at QB that have run state championships: See every Hobart state championship, Griffith's team, the Ben Davis team that dismantled Valpo (yes they had James Banks at QB, but he did not pass much), The Warren Central championship teams, and the list goes on. You can win games without a pocket passer or west coast style QB at the high school level. Now that said, what else did those teams have in common? Outstanding defense and offensive lines that opened holes and could hold the defense. THAT is where I see Portage having it's weakness. The D not holding and the O-Line not opening things for Coleman.

Hmmm I am probably one of the biggest Portage fans, but I honestly DO NOT see them doing too much this season at all. Like jt "money" hoyo said...4 wins is realistic. Jt and I checked out the scrimmage last night and the offense looked pretty decent, BUT the OLINE looked a little slim and like richsapper said, i think the holes are gonna be very small for one mr. coleman, and simpson. I do believe they have a qb that will be among one of the best portage has seen. I have backed Pearmen since his freshman year and said he will turn this team around, BUT not this year...not this team.
I will put $$$$ that portage RETURNS to dominance next season and wins the DAC and SECTIONALS after a 10 year drought.

Portage is the third worst team in the conference. You guys who think different are idiots.

Like I have said this Portage team is a year away for sure, Fadely knows from where he speaks, he actually has coached these kids in middle school.

You were all wrong! Did you see or hear about the scrimmage? Coach Mac is the best in the area and will lead the REAL INDIANS to a conference title.

Munster is a middle of the road NCC team, Simpson will not take the pounding in the DAC too small.

Yes apollo, but in your poll Munster is higher than Portage. It isn't true. Simpson will be fine in the DAC, size isn't everything.

Well..I heard Portage put on a show offensively but forgot they had to play defense too..Mishawaka isn't better than half the teams in the DAC yet scored 57 points
Better go check out the game next week against Gary Roosevelt..might be the only win you see for a few weeks

If you were not there, you do not know. Mishawaka is a great team, smaller or not. Portage looked great. Pearman is the man at QB and he had a couple of TD passes and even a reception on a two point conversion. He passed for over 250 yards too, and Coleman was DA MAN. Portage POWER IS BACK! I told you all. Simpson chipped in too. Mishawaka had an offense that I would put against anyone in the DAC. Portage will get to winning next week and will beat the FAKE INDIANS after that. Everyone said they we weak at QB and the line and THEY WERE WRONG. I know that we lost, but we played good. I don't think anyone in the DAC would have done better last night.

Whoa slow down a bit... I agree with the offense clicking. I do believe Pearman maybe the best qb in the region after watching him last night and Coleman does put up an argument of being the best rb. I mean some of those runs he had were unhuman like lol. I think that all the teams woulda struggled stopping that qb from Mishawaka. That guy is sick. If somehow the d steps up its game I think we have a shot at 2nd place. Lake central just scares the hell outta me looking at what they have and how they easily destroyed Munster. I hope I'm wrong

Yeah, I was not there, but from what I read it seems like Portage has things going in the right direction. A lot of people underestimate Mishawaka because all that they know about them is that they are 4A, but what they forget is that Bart Curtis is a hell of a coach, one of the best in the state. They were 7-4 last season and beat some pretty good competition and the year before beat Penn (twice) Washington and other high powered programs.
Now that said, I agree with Fadley. Lake Central should beat Portage. Stranger things have happened, and I don't think Munster is a very good team over all, but LC is the best team in the region at this point. In the battle of the Indians, I think the blue version comes up on top. Sorry indianbacker.

I agree that indianbacker is off base as far as how good this Portage team is. They are better than I thought they would be and the offensive line and QB spot seem better than most thought according to what I am seeing here and in the papers.
On the other hand, as I said, Mishawaka is pretty darn good, and 4A or not (they were 5A 2 years ago) they are a good team. Over half of the starters were back from last year's team and Sam Schrader is a 3 year starter and on of the best option QBs in the state. Matt Carver is a great back as well and a big play type of guy. Mishawaka competes on a regular basis with Penn, St. Joe (although they seem like they may be a bit down this year), the other South Bend teams like Washington, and win. Heck since Bart Curtis has been the caoch of the Cavemen, he is 38-12 (including the Portage game). They also have routinely put up 35-55 points a game. Make no mistake, this is a high powered offense.
I read about the game in both the P-T and Times as well as the South Bend paper online, and it seems like it was mainly big plays that killed Portage, but they had their own too. Portage is not the worldbeater some would make them out to be by any stretch, but seem to be better than expected against a very, very good Mishawaka team.
