I have a daughter who plays volleyball, but she is younger. I don't know a lot about the high schools . Does anybody know who the best volleyball teams are. She will be playing for Chesterton if we do not move.

Volleyball in the Region is usually very good, with Duneland teams often leading the way. Valpo and LaPorte are always good, but Chesterton and Lake Central should be right there. Munster has been the team to beat in the Northwest Crossroads and brings back Shannon Farrel who led the team in scoring as a soph last season. Griffith and Andrean should be solid too, but without Bonewits, Griffith may not be as strong. Wheeler & Marquette should be the best teams in the GSSC, and Kouts should be great in the PCC along with Boone Grove and Washington Township. Now if a 3A or 4A team could just get past the teams in Michiana, they would have a great shot at representing the North in the Volleyball Finals

Rich is right. The strength of volleyball here comes in part from the high school programs and in part due to the Dunes Volleyball Club and other club teams that help the girls compete at a very high level. It hasn't turned into a lot of state titles outside of Marquette in recent years and Michigan City's 1 championship. Penn, St. Joe and the like often kill the area's chances in 3 and 4A.

Thank you. She plays for a church league right now, but will be in middle school next year. Should I get her into club volleyball? I am just afraid because it costs so much. I am also afraid not to because she may not be as good as the other kids either if I don't.

I can't give advice there. You have to do what is best for your daughter. I know most high school players do play on the club circuit though.

No problem. Like I said, just check it out for yourself and see what is best for her. Talk to some high school and middle school coaches for their advice too.

I would definitely have your daughter play club volleyball if she is serious about volleyball and wants to play at the high school level and possibly beyond. My daughter didn't start playing club until 8th grade and she was behind. However, this did deveop her skills and she turned out to be a starter for her high school team and is now enjoying a college scholarship for it. I don't believe she would have developed without playing at a club, as that is where she learned all her skills; not by the junior high nor high school coaching.
