I'll admit, I have been known to drink some Kool Aid from time to time with certain teams, but just not seeing it with this team..they just lost to Lowell by 10 without Katie Bobos..lost to Hobart by double digits last week..this is a team that won 5 games last year and 8 the year before that..I'm seeing maybe 8 wins this year depending on what the non-conference schedule looks like..they look like a 5th place team in the DAC right now IMO
Nicki Monahan gets alot of attention and was named to the Indiana Junior All-Star team..I think she is a good player but not quite to the elite status that some people want to put her..She is an excellent shooter and efficient with free throws..I think what will ultimately hold her back from getting a D1 scholarship is her speed..IMO she just isn't fast enough or agile enough to play D1..She will be a very good addition for a school at another level..Not trying to tear her down and say she can't play..just giving an honest assessment..I know there was some talk about some of this on the MAB show..some people think she might be the best player in the area..how would you all rate her and the Portage Indians?

Portage will be fine. Coach Seibert is doing a good job of building up the program. Nicki Monahan is definitely one of the top players in the area. She is similar to Blayr in some ways. I know they play together on the same travel team. If she isn't D1 who cares? She was good enough to make junior all stars. Would love to see my Wolves have a chance to play Portage. Maybe next year.

She's better than Brooke Gardner and she went D-1.

Monahan is a great player. I think she is a D1 player, probably a mid major, Horizon League, maybe even a MAC school. If not, she will be a super star at a lower level. As pccwolves said, that doesn't matter in high school if you even play in college. Tori Bliss for example was a great high school player, but a better track athlete and is, at LSU now for track. There are players at every high school that are great players who never play in college. Portage is not Michigan City or even Merrillville

The board cut off my post... At any rate they are not MC or Merrillville, but they should be a solid team.

I agree with Apollo. Portage will be above .500 for sure. Portage will beat the teams he mentioned, plus a possible win against Laporte and probably will win some of the non conference games. It's really hard to tell in the summer how good teams will be. Coaches try new things that they wouldn't in season because it doesn't matter if they win. It's kind of like the preseason in the NFL where they are trying to get a feel for younger players. It simply doesn't matter.

Portage had Nicki Monahan last year..and the year before that..they never even came close to a winning season..just trying to understand why you all think this will be a breakout season for them
If they play the same schedule as they played last season they will be in trouble..they can't beat Hobart..lost both games they played last year and lost to them last week by double digits..EC will give them trouble because of their speed, but they will have a fighting chance in that game..if they play Hammond and Munster again those games will be wins..they are in the Northridge tournament again..if they can get a really good draw they might win a game or two..I agree they should sweep Valpo and Crown Point..I think Chesterton is about even with them and I could see a split just like last year..guess we will have to wait and see what the actual schedule is once it comes out

The DAC is a tough league. What Merrillville was able to accomplish last season was nothing short of amazing. Not because they didn't have a great team, but because of having to play all teams not once but twice. Portage has a young team and may take their lumps early, but don't be surprised if they are in pretty good shape come sectional time.

I don't know that anyone said that Portage would have a breakout season. I see .500 though, and Monahan is one of the best players in the Northern half of the state for sure. That said, you can have an outstanding player on an otherwise underperforming team. Here are a couple of examples from pro sports:
Remember Chris Paul playing for the Hornets? I am not sure if anyone would argue that he is an elite NBA player, but those Hornets teams were God-awful.
Don Mattingly was one of the all time greats, especially at the plate. In his tenure with the team, not only did the Yankees not make it to the Worls Series, they only made the playoffs....wait for it....once.
While we are talking about baseball, how about Ted Williams, the only player to hit over .400 for a season. One of the best hitters ever played for some HORRIBLE Boston teams.
I can come up with more, but those are three of my favorites.
Back to the initial point though, Monohan is great and will be more experienced, of course. That won;t make Portage a powerhouse by itself, but I think they have a great shot at over .500. They probably don;t have a shot at winning the DAC and the sectional depends on matchups, but I wouldn't bet on that. I think what everyone is saying is that they should be improved and be over .500.
