Went to see the Oilmen for the first time yesterday. Had a great time with my wife, kids and parents. It kinda had the feel of a small college game, which make sens since the rosters are filled exclusively with college players. It was nice to see some of the guys that we saw at the local high schools competing close to home.
It looked like the first place Oilmen were going to lose because of some costly errors early on, but a HUGE and I mean HUGE 8 run 8th inning propelled NWI's team to the victory!
The best part though had to be for my kids to get to meet some players and then for me to play catch with the boys after the game. They woke up this morning wanting to play catch again!
If you haven't been out there, make the trip. It is worth it for sure!

I had heard that they were off to a 12-3 start and that there manager had played baseball at Mississippi and in the Cape Cod League.

They are apollo. Rich's account, Brandon Vickery (who posted his thoughts on Facebook and who calls the games for the team), and both local paper said it best. The Oilmen are always good for a late game rally and their manager makes some great adjustments. The Oilmen are in first place at the moment, and some of the athletes making the biggest difference went to high school in the area.

It was a great game. We will absolutely go back! I hope fans come out and support them so they are around for a long time. It's great that college players have an option for a summer league close to home. It is worth the trip to Whiting for sure.

They aren't either indianbacker. They are a summer wooden bat league. Think the movie Summer Set on 119th Street!

Yes. Basically it helps current college players work on their game in the summer. They use wooden bats to get used to them against good competition and since they will be using them if they go pro. There are members of teams such as Purdue, Toledo, Illinois, Valpo, Robert Morris, South Suburban, U of Chicago, Grand Valley State, Judson, UIC, Southern Indiana...and those are just off of the top of my head. A good percentage of the roster played high school baseball here. It was nice to see so many of their families in the stands too. The coolest part was that since it was Father's Day some of the players dads played catch with them just like the fans. It was really cool. The concessions were more affordable than you may think as well.

The Oilmen just keep winning. The level of competition is pretty high too. Looking at the rosters around the league, you see players from Division 1, Big Ten schools to players from powerhouse NAIA programs and everywhere in between. Don't forget, there is much less difference in baseball maybe them any other sport with great players going to all levels because of draft rules in baseball. I hope they stock around for a long time and become a staple in NWI in the summer!
