O.K., seriously, why do Europeans take soccer as such a life and death proposition? I know we have some violence surrounding sports, and looting and stupidity following championships etc, but the idea of fans fighting over soccer is just one of the dumbest concepts that I can think of. When I saw the story about Russian and Polish fans fighting today all I could think of is how boring and horrible these fans lives must be to feel like they needed to fight. It makes no sense.

Much of this goes back to the Soviet Union and also WWII.
I attended a game in Amsterdam in the early 90's which matched Ajax (Netherlands) against Bayern Munich (Germany). The tension in the stands was unbelievable. The German team was greeted by the entire stadium making a hissing sound. When I asked, I was told that was the sound of gas going into the gas chambers of WWII.
Lots of history in Europe and many people choose to remember that history. Of course, there are hooligans that just like to fight also

Greyhound, Thanks for sharing. That is amazing. I know we take sports seriously here, but it seems like it is on a whole other level in Europe. Frankly, I still don't get it, but it could make for reams of sociological research

wow greyhound! it is great that you can relate that story. What's even cooler is that you saw it in person. Why do you think that those tensions are there? It seems odd to me.

Hooligans are funny. I wish we were like that with sports here. Fans would be more excited about their teams.

They are stupid, but at least they really like their teams.
