SPOTLIGHT GAME OF THE WEEK
Griffith at Morton
Morton has won the last five matchups in this series. Last Griffith win was in the 2008 Sectional 9 championship 21-7. Last year, Morton held off Griffith at the Boneyard 21-14 and then in the Sectional Championship 27-26. Jim Pickett makes his debut as Griffith’s head coach, just the 3rd head man for GHS in 37 years. He has one of the best playmakers in NWI in QB Austin Brown. Brett Brinkley also returns in the backfield as well. The Panthers will look for some youngsters to step on defense to replace graduated standouts Nathan McNeill and Tyler Yost. Morton has won three straight sectional titles. Jimmy Glidewell brings some experience back at the QB spot as coach Roy Richards looks to go with his normal 2-QB platoon. Morton will look to fill some key spots on defense. Listen LIVE on MAB beginning at 6:30 PM CDT.
BEST OF THE REST
Lowell at Crown Point
In the oldest rivalry game in Indiana, CP won last year at the Inferno 27-6. The Bulldogs enter 2012 with a new coach in Kevin Enright. Tristan Peterson looks for a big year at the RB. Jake Jatis took over for an injured QB in the 2011 tournament and helped the Bulldogs win a sectional title. He has good targets on the perimeter in Braxton Rice and Zach Plesac. Lowell looks to settle on a featured running back. George Fields looks to be the guy. The Red Devils will need to rebuild their entire offensive line.
SB St. Joseph’s at Chesterton
This may be the best game in the area. The 2-time 3A runner-ups head to north Porter County looking to contain a very experienced backfield in QB Chris Katsafaros and WB Joe Troop. The Indians defeated Chesterton one year ago on a last second FG 30-28.
Mishawaka at Portage
Portage alum Wally McCormack takes over the Indians, and will have a tough challenge in the opener at the Warpath against one of the top option QB’s in Indiana in Sam Schrader. The Indians also have a solid playmaker back in 2012 in Rashaan Coleman.
Valparaiso at Penn
Dave Coyle makes his debut as Valpo head coach succedding Hall-of-Fame coach Mark Hoffman. Coyle will look to count on a veteran RB corps led by Andrew Kittridge and Stephen Simms. The Vikes will look to find a QB. More often than not, points are hard to come by when Valpo and Penn hook up. Last year, Penn won at Viking Field 21-10 and controlled the ball for the entire 4th quarter.
East Chicago at Hammond
The Wildcats caught the Cardinals off guard in last year’s season opener 37-14. Eric Schrieber Jr. is back at QB for his dad / coach. East Chicago looks to build on last year’s 7-4 mark and a tough loss in the sectionals against Morton. Big time rival game in North Lake County.
