Ok..when the breakdown of the new 5A and 6A came out, I vaguely looked at the configuration of where all these teams were placed
I can't believe how weak 5A is going to be in two years..there is not one state power in this class..Chesterton, who has never won a sectional, could conceivably reach the state finals with how weak the bracket will be
But, here is the kicker..if Cathedral wins at least a regional this year, which I expect them to..they would move into 5A when this whole new format takes place..that would make them the heavy favorite to win state..but having said that, I think Chesterton still has a REALLY good shot of getting to the dome

Chesterton will be the largest school in the north bracket in terms of enrollment in the new 32 team 5A configuration. I started this same topic on the GID and tossed out who some of the top programs in the new 32 team class 5A might be. Cathedral, Chesterton, Castle, Zionsville, Bedford North Lawrence, Floyd Central, Evansville North, Bloomington North, Kokomo and Fort Wayne Northside will be some of the top contenders. gridirondigest.net/index.php?/topic/43925-looking-ahead-to-2013-32-team-class-5a-top-programs/

You are both right. 5A is weak. It could be a Chesterton march through the north as odd as that sounds, only to likely be beat by Cathedral in the 5A championship. I would imagine they would win a regional, so I am sure they would go up a class. I like Tommy's list of top contenders. I would tend to agree with that, especially Kokomo who gets no pub but is a very good team. That said, being the largest in a class guarantees nothing.

I agree with richsapper as far as being the largest in class not being a guarantee. East Chicago is the largest in 4A and among the bottom feeders.

Tommy is right, not only is EC the largest in 4A, but Richmond (the 4th largest in 4A) isn't exactly a world beater either. Mishawaka (#2 in 4A) and Columbus East (#3) have been pretty good, but again the 1st and 4th not the greatest records.
In 3A the 5 largest schools are Indy Northwest, Edgewood, Gavit, Danville, and Rushville. Northwest has not had a winning season since '05, Edgewood has been up and down, Gavit last had a winning season in '03, Danville has struggles since a great '07 season and has had 2 winning seasons since 2000.
In 2A the top 5 are Woodlan, Fairfield, North Putnam, Andrean, and Benton Central. Woodlan has won 3 games over the last 3 seasons, Fairfield, North Putman, and Andrean have been good, and Benton Central has been up and down.
No need to go to 1A, you get the point. Size isn't the only factor in winning.

Chesterton can't beat anyone. They will not be state champs in football.

Chesterton can't beat anyone. They will not be state champs in football. Under the current format I agree. But when the new 32 team class 5A comes into play they should be a perennial to win sectional and a strong contender to win both regional and semi-state. Coach Snyder has really got to be licking his chops about right now.

I would like to see Chesterton do well. I am not sure about a state championship, but they should be a contender. It reminds me a little bit of Hobart when they were the smallest school in the Duneland. They did not always have the best record in the reguar season but tore through schools their own size in the tournament.

Hobart did win 55 straight Duneland confereance game from the late 70s through the mid 80s. That is the second largest conference winning streak after Penn NIC streak that ended a couple seasons ago.

This is different though..they will only be a contender because of a weak field..hell, 4A and 3A would be more difficult than 5A..they couldn't beat St. Joe last year..imagine having to go to their field and playing a sectional game
There's still a chance that maybe a Mishawaka or Fort Wayne Snider could jump into 5A by next season..those are two borderline teams as far as enrollment is concerned
But I will agree that playing in the DAC should make Chesterton plenty ready for the tournament

I don't know that it is that much different JT.
5A is weak, that's for sure. Snider going to be in 6A right now, but they and Columbus North could drop to 5A possibly. Mishawaka could easily move up depending on enrollment and Cathedral could move easily to 5A if they win a regional this year. That means that Chesterton and Munster both have a really good chance.
Don't forget about the contenders that tommy mentioned too. Castle is always pretty good having 13 winning seasons in the last 18 or so. Zionsville was a little down last season, but every other year they seem to win 8 -10 games at least. BNL hasn't had a losing season since 2003. Floyd Central has been good in recent years. I see Floyd Central, Castle, and BNL beating each other up in the tournament. Evansville North is ok, but idk if I would say top contender. Bloomington North could be a contender, they have a good coach and have had decent seasons. Kokomo has won 8 or 9 games every season since Brett Colby has been head coach, but always run into Snider. If Snider does not drop, Kokomo could be one of the biggest beneficiaries of 6A. FW North is ok too.
The biggest winners to me are up north though in Chesterton, Kokomo, and even Munster. Munster does not play schools that are at the level of the Duneland, other than Andrean and sometimes Griffith. That is why Chesterton is probably better off that the other schools up North, because of the solid competition that they play.

Chesterton has to win a sectional first, not to say they won't in the new 5A, and you know what they say, "the first one is the hardest to get" and the Land of Troy has had some great players like Zach Wellsand and not gotten it done.
