Freshman Simone Castenada scores 2 goals ad LC defeats CP 2-1. Kelly Schaefer had the lone CP goal in the opener. Below is a run down on the season.
With Munster's Player of the Year Defender Jaycee Helmer graduating and playing at Butler- Munster will be now be led by All-State Senior Scorer Addy Andello and Junior Juli Nelson, but will be young in spots and will get better as the year goes on. Wheeler defeated Hobart 9-0 in the opener and look for the 1A State Runner-Up with All-State Senior Scorer Lyric Green, Senior Midfielder Claudia Phillips, Soph Midfielder Gia Diaz, and Junior Midfielders Riley O'Brien and Riley Garcia to be good in the lower classes and Andrean under Coach Clapman to rebound with All-State Senior Striker Alyssa Schichner. Highland returns the area's top goalie in Senior Morgan Rinkema. Junior Brook Burbridge and Lexi Darnell return as top players for Boone Grove and Hebron returns Senior Forward Kaitlyn Cherry.
Like last year with the Iowa Commit Andrea Naumoski, LC has now brought in two new academy players led by Eclipse Select Standout Scorer Michelle Testa and Valpo University Commit and Schaumburg Socker Midfielder Daena Schuh. This will embolden a squad that already includes Senior All-State candidate Defender Anika Berg, Senior Forward Caroline Puch, Senior Midfielder Stephanie Dijak, Junior Midfielders Mackenzie Rainwater, and Brenna Thompson. CP also returns a strong senior core for Veteran Coach Chris Mikrut and it is led by All-State Candidates in the Midfield Olivia Small and Emmie Mcconnell[committed to Truman State D2], along with Soph Alyssa McMahon, Senior Defensive Power Midfielder Emily Wielgus, and Soph Lexi Dominguez. The Area's best defense is also led again by Senior All-State Candidate Leah Surufka, Senior Sela Ozemir, Soph Brooke Ferkul, and Senior Zoe Olivares. Look for all-around performer Senior Libby Rockovits to play on the offense and on defense. The CP Offense will be led this year by Junior striker Bridget Rayonec taking over from PU Northwest's 13 goal scorer Haneen Abdullah and Wisconsin -Parkside's Delaney Benich, from two years ago. Also returning on offense are Seniors Abby Kelliher and Maddy Donofrio to go along with Soph Marcia Keilman, Soph Erin Harrison, Freshman Emma Adams, and Soph Grace Wells. Three top goalies return for CP and are led by Senior Maddie Johnson, Junior Madison Dross, and Underclassmen Kelly Schaefer. Look for Schaefer to play on Offense at times also. Valpo will miss All Area Performer Kelly Landry but will be strong also and they wil be led by Senior All-State Candidate Olivia Shaw in the Midfield and Senior All-State Forward Candidate Janci Courtenay, to go along with returning Chicago Inter Academy Senior Club Player Rachel Ross, who will be one of the area's best defenders. Seniors Carly Milroy and Claire Brogan return in the midfield also. Chesterton will be young but are led by Senior All-State Defender Candidate Olivia Vesling and Senior Midfielder Olivia Hansen to go along with Soph Goal Scorer Addy Joiner. Joiner scored several goals in the scrimmage in a 5-0 win over Lowell and Chesterton defeated Mich City 9-1 in its opener. Portage has three solid players in Senior Yessie Tinoco, Karli Leibig, and Junior Nikki Melton who is back after she transfered from Michigan City Marquette last year. Grace Nestich will lead Hobart this year. At KV, Karmen Nowak will be a top performer.
All-American Midfielder Brooke Van Dyke os moving on to Notre Dame and not playing at Penn, for her Senior year[this wil hurt Penn] and Kristina Lynch is gone. But still look for Penn and SB St. Joe - [led by All-Staters Caroline Edmonds and Andrea Romo] to be very strong this year up North. The sectional at Crown Point this year will feature Munster, LC, and CP which will be a toss-up. Valpo should be the favorite in the other sectional along with Chesterton. My 3A get to the regional picks this year are CP, Penn, Valpo, and Northridge.
